FAQ

What is Battleship Reason?

It is a not so thinly veiled reference to Battleship Potemkin.

Huh, what? Battleship Potemkin?

Yes, one of the greatest propaganda films of the 20th century. It was filmed in 1925, by one clever chap called Sergei Eisenstein – and it is a film that portrays the struggles of the common sailors aboard the battleship Potemkin. Most famous scene perhaps is the Odessa steps massacre – the first time that a film maker uses an image of a baby’s pram rolling out of control down the steps. In many ways, this is THE ultimate nationalistic propaganda piece of the 20th century.

So what does this actually have to do with your blog?

Well, simple really – Battleship Potemkin represents a time when governments had much more control over their people – when national propaganda and national media shaped public perception more than anything. Battleship Reason is Potemkin’s opposite. In this age of nearly free flow of information, it would be a shame to allow ourselves to be misled by others. When you can find things out on your own and make up your own opinions, then why let others do it for you? Oh, and this is not just limited to nations, but to our trigger-happy, scandal-loving mass media as well. Just be reasonable – don’t let others tell you the way the world works – read, surf, watch, and most of all – talk to people – to form your own perceptions.

I see. Is this a cult of some sort?

Afraid not. Although, we do enjoy lamb, but generally of the roast kind. Some wine doesn’t go amiss either.

Okay, yeah, you’re funny, I get it. Now, onto more pressing issues. What’s with all the different categories I see (or don’t see)?

There are two main sections of the website: The Deep and The Shallow. The Deep covers all those topics where we vaguely expect you to engage your brain and to think things over. The Shallow on the other hand is just there for cheap laughs and for the infinite amusement of your brain. Oh, and there are also sub-sections!

The Deep

The Actual: This is the most serious part of the blog perhaps – this is where we cover international events and analyze them as best as we can. Expect strong opinions, but strong opinions built on observation, not personal bias.

The Cultural: For the arts of this world, really. Movies, music, books, theatre, etc. In general though, I doubt you will find review of the latest Terminator on here. Well, maybe – but only if it had a really good story. And lots of explosions.

The Intellectual: Where musings go – but musings that are thought-provoking, inspiring, etc. You won’t find a pirates vs. ninjas discussion here. Unless of course there is some good valid reason behind it. Ninjas. Totally.

The Shallow

The Curious: We all know that the internet is full of things that make us chuckle or gasp or laugh or cry. This is a place where we will select only the finest delicacies of life the internet has to offer.

The Historical: The LEAST serious part of the blog, really. This is at best highly amusing satire, at worst, a bunch of made up history. In essence, it’s a humorous look at the history of what if.

The Interactive: Games. Both of the computer variety and of the pen and paper and board kind. Oh and card games as well – but not Pokemon. Never Pokemon.

About Us

Captain

Out of the entire crew of Battleship Reason, the Captain is perhaps the least serious one. His perspective on the world is slightly skewed, which is – okay – because the world on the whole is slightly skewed in the best of circumstances. Does this mean that he sees the world as it truly is? That his wisdom and his insight are such that it can spot the most illogical and logical conclusions and connections between the disparate parts of this world? No, probably not. The Captain considers himself to be a philanthropist of the human experience and of the little things that make us who we are. He can be sarcastic, but is rarely cynical. Optimistic, but does not see the world through Gucci off-baby rose tinted glasses. He cares about the people around him more than he cares about the perceived notions of the society. Example? People are people everywhere you go – you get honest crooks and corrupt policemen. Not every rich person is a snob, not every poor person is humble. It would be an insult to the rich colours of human lives to allow such concepts to enter our minds easily. Instead, talk to people – find out more about them – and generally accept them for who they are.
